As I was driving to Deep River County Park, I received a slightly panicked phone call from my bride for the day, Christina. She had planned a beautiful outdoor wedding ceremony at the park's gazebo, and it was in danger of being ruined by the remnants of Hurricane Isaac coming through Indiana. Because harps are made of wood ~ and extremely expensive to repair or replace ~ it's crucial that it not get wet! Fortunately, the gazebo has a (mostly) solid roof, and provides enough cover for the harp. The only change we had to make to have the wedding go off as planned was to set the harp up inside the gazebo, rather than off to the side. Not bad!
While I was setting up, Christina's mother thanked me for my flexibility and being willing to go ahead with the outdoor ceremony. If it's possible at all, I find a way to make it happen! Fortunately for everyone, the rain stopped about half an hour before the ceremony began.
But then...no officiant! He wasn't from the area, and couldn't find the park. I let the photographer know that ~ if all else fails ~ I am ordained and could perform the ceremony. I did that a couple of years ago when an officiant was nearly an hour late, leaving everyone sitting outside in the sun, and putting the entire wedding schedule significantly behind. Fortunately, I haven't needed to use it yet ~ their pastor showed up about fifteen minutes after the ceremony was supposed to begin.
As the families entered, I played "What a Wonderful World," followed by "Marry Me" for the entrance of the maid of honor and the flower girl (the daughter of the bride). Christina made her big entrance to Pachelbel's "Canon in D." As the couple was pronounced husband and wife, I played "King Williams' March" for their exit from the garden.

Northwest Indiana Harpist ~ Wedding Ceremony at County Line Orchard
Josie & Arthur are the sweetest couple! They celebrated their wedding ceremony at the County Line Orchard in Hobart, Indiana, in a (mercifully!) shaded grove among the apple trees. To combat the high temperatures, they even provided their guests a beverage stand, complete with cool lemonade, water, and iced tea.
Their guests arrived at the ceremony site on trolleys. With so many people attending, it took awhile to get everyone down to the orchard from the main barn. Harp music kept the early arrivals entertained as we waited for all of the guests to arrive. A trolley carrying the bride and bridesmaids followed the final group of guests, and the wedding party came down the aisle to "All You Need is Love" by the Beatles. Josie's own processional was "Sunrise, Sunset" from Fiddler on the Roof.
During the ceremony, the couple performed a wine sharing ceremony. While this was taking place, I played Elton John's "Your Song." The officiant had the guests move to the center aisle prior to the recessional, so the newlyweds would be surrounded by their family and friends as they made their exit from the ceremony. They headed off to the reception to "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz.

Northwest Indiana Harpist ~ Wedding Ceremony in Hobart
Sarah and Brian's wedding at the Revelli Bandshell in Hobart, Indiana was beautiful. Even though I am sure the bride and groom probably wished for a slightly cooler day, their guests got to enjoy blue skies with a nice breeze!
The wedding party entered from a covered walkway next to Lake George. The bridesmaids and groomsmen entered together to "King William's March." This was a great choice by Sarah, and one of my favorite songs to play at a wedding! While most brides and grooms typically choose this as a recessional piece, it really works for a processional as well.
Sarah made her way to the bandshell with both her mom and dad escorting her. For her entrance, she had selected "Canon in D." This is another one of my wedding favorites and a song that I readily suggest to anyone looking for something classical and traditional, but not wanting the Wagner "Bridal Chorus" (aka "Here Comes the Bride").
When it came time for the married couple to be introduced and to walk together for the first time as Mr. and Mrs., I provided a very majestic musical background with "Trumpet Tune."

Northwest Indiana Wedding Harpist
While I was off playing for a wedding in Michigan, Jeff had two weddings on September 18th. The first was in the gardens of the Oliver Mansion (Copshaholm) at the Northern Indiana Center for History in South Bend. The rain threatened to put a damper on the outdoor ceremony, but held off until the very moment the couple was pronounced "husband and wife". The guests ran for cover - and so did the harpist!
Their wedding music was mostly traditional:
Before the ceremony, the bride opted for more popular selections (The Prayer, My Heart Will Go On, and anything by The Beatles).
Once this wedding was complete, Jeff was off to Hobart, Indiana to play harp for a wedding at Deep River County Park. When we lived in Valparaiso, we played there frequently, but less so since we moved to South Bend. It's always enjoyable to get back to the area! Jeff didn't get any pictures at this one (the rain is hard on the harp and harpist!), but here is one from a couple of years ago:
It's a beautiful venue, and they usually have several weddings there every weekend. One of the best features of the location is a large gazebo, which is a good back-up for the drizzly weather. For the bridal party processional, the bride chose "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera, and her own entrance was the popular "Canon in D". "Trumpet Tune" made for an upbeat recessional.
